Moissanite vs diamond: what changes when you buy jewelry?

Moissanite is a different gemstone from diamond. Choose between them by understanding the stone first, then comparing the complete piece: its design, metal, dimensions, setting and price. A jewelry name or a sparkle-heavy photograph cannot answer all of those questions.

If you are choosing a chain, bracelet or pair of earrings in Malaysia or Singapore, the useful comparison is the piece you would actually wear. Start with the differences below, then check the product details in your selected market.

Moissanite is not a lab-grown diamond

Diamond is carbon. Moissanite is silicon carbide. Laboratory-grown diamond belongs to the diamond category; laboratory-grown moissanite remains moissanite. GIA distinguishes diamond simulants from both natural and laboratory-grown diamonds in its guide to simulants and lab-grown diamonds.

That difference is not a reason to disguise either material. A clear listing should identify the stone you are buying, rather than use “diamond” as a loose synonym for a bright, colourless gem.

Question Moissanite Diamond
What material is it? Silicon carbide Carbon
Is it the same gemstone? No; it is a distinct material Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds are both diamond
Mohs hardness 9.25 in GIA's reference 10 in GIA's reference
What else should I compare? The actual stone appearance, metal, setting, size, clasp and complete-piece price

How does the sparkle look different?

Moissanite is known for pronounced coloured flashes, often called fire. It is also doubly refractive, unlike diamond. These optical differences are described in GIA's guide to imitation gem materials.

The practical question is which look you prefer. Compare photographs or video in more than one lighting condition, with similar framing and scale. A close-up under direct lights and a wider photograph in soft daylight are different presentations; do not treat their apparent brightness as a controlled test.

On a chain, consider the overall pattern as well as individual stones. On earrings, look at the size and setting from the front and side. Ask for an additional view if the listing does not show a detail that matters to you.

Hardness does not describe the whole piece

Mohs hardness describes resistance to scratching. Resistance to breaking or chipping is a separate property, called toughness. Even diamond can chip, as GIA's explanation of gemstone durability shows. A hardness number alone cannot tell you which activities suit a finished piece.

A stone's hardness rating does not tell you the quality of a clasp, the security of its setting or how a finish should be cleaned. Compare those details separately. Do not interpret a high number as permission to treat a finished chain or bracelet as indestructible.

When a material or care detail is missing, ask for it before deciding. The right answer should refer to the actual product, not only to the gemstone category.

How should you compare prices in Malaysia and Singapore?

Compare complete pieces in the same market and currency. Match the design, selected dimensions, metal and finish before comparing the displayed price, then check delivery costs and return terms. A loose-stone quote and a finished chain price answer different questions.

Select Malaysia for MYR or Singapore for SGD, then choose the size you want on the product page. Use that current price when setting your budget. An old currency conversion or a general percentage-saving claim is a poor substitute for comparing the pieces you are considering.

What should you check before ordering?

  • Stone identity: is the piece described as moissanite, natural diamond or laboratory-grown diamond?
  • Metal and finish: what is the base metal, and is there a surface coating or plating?
  • Size: check the chain length and width, bracelet length or earring dimensions rather than estimating from a model.
  • Construction: inspect the setting and clasp details that are actually provided.
  • Total purchase: compare the selected size, current market price and stated delivery and return terms.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the material you want, in a design you will wear, with details you can verify. If you specifically want diamond, moissanite does not become diamond because it looks bright. If you want moissanite, evaluate it on its own terms instead of relying on claims that it is identical to another stone.
